The American Bison is a massive herbivore with a large head, muscular hump, and shaggy dark brown fur. They graze primarily on grasses and sedges and are social animals that form herds. Historically roaming the Great Plains in enormous numbers, they are now managed on private ranches and public lands for hunting and conservation.
