Nile Lechwe Overview


The Nile Lechwe is a large, semi-aquatic antelope with a reddish-brown coat, white underparts, and long, slightly twisted horns in males. Highly adapted to swampy and floodplain habitats, it is an excellent swimmer and grazes mainly on aquatic vegetation. Nile Lechwes are social, often forming herds that congregate in wetland areas.
